El Tímpano and CatchLight invite you to Postcards from La Pulga, a photo exhibit featuring stories from Oakland’s beloved Coliseum Swap Meet.
The exhibit opened on June 8, 2024 with remarks from the lead photographer, Hiram Alejandro Durán, photojournalist for El Tímpano, CatchLight Local Fellow, and Report for America photo corps member.
Background
Last fall, the Oakland-based civic media organization El Tímpano set up a pop-up photo booth at the Oakland Coliseum Swap Meet, an open-air market affectionately known by many as “La Pulga.” The team photographed and interviewed to dozens of vendors and patrons who shared tales of celebration, camaraderie, heartbreak, and survival.
Gallery hours are 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. The exhibit will be on view until August 2, 2024. Note: The Oakland Lowdown will be closed July 4-5 in observance of the federal holiday.
